Redesigning Google Drive User Experience

Challenge: Google Drive has become an integral system for storing and sharing data in the cloud, however with the quantity of information, it is difficult for users to find and modify files efficiently.

Solution: An interface that visually organizes data, and presents relevant options to personalize the user experience, saving time spent searching.

Think-Aloud Cognitive Walkthrough

Task 1: Ask user to un-star/star the folder in Starred.

Task 2: Ask user to rename folder in Starred and press cancel.

Task 3: Ask user to delete the folder and press cancel in Starred.

Task 4: Ask user to quickly see content in folder in Starred.

Task 5: Ask user to add someone to folder.

Task 6: Ask user to “get link” of folder.

Task 7: Ask user to change color of folder in Starred.

INSIGHTS

  • Many users misunderstood the swiping arrow as a drop-down menu.

  • Some users thought rearranging folder placement would drop the dragged item within another folder.

  • Using forced touch to delete a folder was not intuitive to any users.

  • Users thought the starred option should be an exterior feature while the information icon should be interior because it's less utilized.

  • All users thought getting the link to a folder and adding someone new were usable and easy to learn.

How It Works

Google Drive will utilize machine learning to optimize time spent searching by providing automated file suggestions derived from user modeling.

Location Services

The system will understand patterns in time and place in order to predict which files users will need in the moment.

G-Suite Data

By analyzing user data, Google Drive will learn who the user is in order to personalize the information presented.

Machine Learning

Artificial intelligence will act as assistant to help users manage their files within the cloud.
