Conversational UI Project with Microsoft

Challenge: In the SCAD Collaborative Learning Center with Microsoft, students were tasked to design a product, service, or solution that demonstrates the value and differentiation of a Conversational User Interface in order to delight users.

Solution: Our solution was Co: a story building companion that uses natural language to build, illustrate, and archive family narratives, in order to create a lasting artifact.

Research & ideation

We began researching disparate fields for a conversational user interface.

We started with eight topics, landed on four pillars, and funneled them down to one: Companionship.

insights

opportunity

Through our research, we found technology often results in isolation.

Therefore, our area of opportunity was to design a CUI that reinvented the campfire experience and brought families together with the use of storytelling.

ux ideation

As a UX designer, I defined the core functions, established the experience journey, and wireframed the information architecture between the user and Co through different modes of storytelling.

CORE FUNCTIONS

We defined core functions that would create an immersive story-telling experience.

The projector manifests the stories through imagery and air-drawings. The camera is utilized to record moments, air drawings, and to detect motion.LED lights provide users with non-verbal communication.

FLOW CHARTS

Out of the box, we designed Co to have delightful conversations and stories that evolve into charming narratives that encourage imagination through various features.

In the initial stages, Co learns from conversations between the parents and child. As the relationship with Co grows, it applies what it's learned to build enriching and personalized stories.

storyboards

Prior to storyboarding, we role-played to empathize with our users.

Upon storyboarding, we visualized how Co would grow over time, and customize to each family.

CONTENT MANAGEMENT APP

During our process, we considered how might the parents stay connected with their child when life gets in the way of quality time.

wireframes

ReCo is a cloud-based content management system that utilizes IOT to keep parents updated and in control.

Usability Testing

We redesigned wireframes considering user feedback.

The ReCo application allows parents to browse through weekly updates, memories, and stories through a calendar.

Parents can add words to Co's vocabulary to personalize the child's experience.

Parents are provided with an analysis of how much time the parent and child have spent with Co, and how much Co has learned.

Parents can also utilize the administrative account to set up restrictions by speaking to ReCo's conversational user interface.
